Introduction

Ledger wallets are the most trusted hardware wallets for securing your crypto assets. This guide at Ledger.com/Start® provides step-by-step instructions to safely configure your device and Ledger Live.

Step 1 — Unboxing & Inspection

Verify the tamper-evident packaging. Only use devices from official Ledger channels to ensure authenticity.

Step 2 — Download Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live from Ledger.com/ledger-live. Choose your operating system and follow installation instructions.

Step 3 — Connect Device

Plug your Ledger device into your computer via USB. Launch Ledger Live to detect it.

Step 4 — Initialize Wallet

Select “Set up as new device” or “Restore from recovery phrase”. Ledger will generate a recovery phrase securely on-device.

Step 5 — Secure Your Recovery Phrase

Write down your 24-word recovery phrase on the provided card. Never store digitally or online.

Step 6 — PIN Setup

Set a secure PIN to protect your Ledger device from unauthorized access.

Step 7 — Install Apps

Use Ledger Live to install apps for cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Each app enables secure transactions for the specific blockchain.

Step 8 — Add Accounts

Add accounts in Ledger Live for each cryptocurrency app installed. This allows sending, receiving, and viewing balances.

Step 9 — Receive & Send Funds

Verify receiving addresses on-device before sharing. For sending, confirm transaction details on the Ledger device to prevent phishing.

Step 10 — Backup & Recovery Test

Test your recovery phrase on a spare device if possible to ensure proper backup and recovery procedures.

Security Best Practices

  • Always download Ledger Live from Ledger.com
  • Never share recovery phrases or PINs online.
  • Confirm addresses on-device for all transactions.
  • Keep firmware updated via Ledger Live.
  • Store recovery phrases offline in secure locations.
